Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 26 July 2007

Police the passes

I WRITE in response to the concern voiced by Anita Brookes over free bus passes issued to under-16s (Boys on the buses idea does not work, July 19).
These passes have meant that London’s young people have been able to travel more often and develop their independence. While there is a problem of anti-social behaviour, this only concerns a minority of pass holders.
I agree this problem must be tackled, but I believe that this should not be done by withdrawing the privilege from London’s entire young population but by increasing the policing of buses and withdrawing passes from the disruptive. While
this would be more expensive, the benefits brought to London’s under-16s by the scheme are too good to lose.
