Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 26 July 2007

Lock market quality

• WITH regards to your article (Lock market destroying its quality shops, July 19).
First, we were traders in Camden Lock market for 25 years; eight years as stallholders and 17 years as leaseholders of a shop. Second, the “dregs” we referred to were the drug dealers and undesirables that have plagued Camden for years and not visitors to Camden market. However, we think it fair to say that these undesirables have contributed to many people no longer visiting Camden as a shopping venue – obviously not entirely the fault of the market management.

• I DISAGREE with the complaints made about the quality of items available in Camden Lock.
I am very interested in jewellery, and friends said I could choose my own present, as they do not live in London, and it was a major birthday.
I found a large silver brooch designed so the layers open up to form the petals of a rose. Every time I wear it, I receive comments about it, from total strangers who want to know where I got it, and who admire it. There are plenty of pieces in Camden Lock which I would be happy to wear.
I also use a stall which sells beautiful shawls from Kashmir. I own three myself, and I have bought one to give to someone else. I plan to do so again.
As a pensioner on a small income, I am very pleased to be able to find things I consider elegant at prices I can afford.

IN the same way that those who visit Turkey, Egypt and Morocco are eager to visit the souks, can anything be done to stop the owners of Camden Lock from destroying this historic area by turning it into a glass-fronted shopping mall, destroying its very character and appeal for tourists and locals?
