Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 26 July 2007

No unisex facility, please, we’re British

• ON Thursday last, we were introduced to Limbrick Architecture who are designing the pools and restoring the Victorian Kentish Town Baths. The architect did not even address satisfactorily basic, but crucial, details about changing and showering areas.
In the 21st century it would appear that we, the British public, are meant to adopt a “Swedish” style with children, parents and grannies all sharing bathing and changing facilities. What nonsense is that when a simple arrangement with men and boys going in one area and women, girls and babies in the other has served us well for generations? Such an inexpensive but common sense idea seemed to have been dismissed by both the architect and Camden. They said we have to wait until the planning stage to make comments but I thought this was the whole purpose of the meeting to make our views known. It would appear they have already made up their mind that we will have to take whatever they are intent on giving us. Precious space is wasted on cubicles for school kids and families, but the rest of us have to make do with silly “unisex” arrangements.
