Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 26 July 2007

Too old to change ways

• I WAS born in the last century and I really feel like Rip van Winkle when he finally awoke – and this is why.
I read that the architects in charge of refurbishing the Kentish Town Baths (Prince of Wales Road) have cleverly managed to obliterate the men’s shower and the women’s shower and combine them into a unisex shower and changing room.
Forty or 50 or 60 years ago, as a young man, I might have thought that was a good idea as it would allow me to ogle the bodies of the female swimmers without the expense of buying pornographic magazines but today, at my age, I prefer to shower and change unobserved by members of the opposite sex.
At the Parliament Hill Lido the opposite happened and after refurbishing for £1.9 million it was found necessary to install modesty screens to separate the sexes.
Now at a cost of a mere £25.3 million (yes, that is 25.3 and not a missprint) the clock has been turned back.
I suggest that Camden liaise with the Corporation of the City of London, who run the Lido, to find out which method is most suitable for Camden’s swimmers.
