MP calls for the end of ‘get-rich-quick’ schemes

HOLBORN and St Pancras MP Frank Dobson has called on the Town Hall to freeze plans to raise money by selling off council properties and making deals with housing associations.
He said: “Our estates need investment not a get-rich-quick auction of local people’s homes. Worse, the Lib Dems and Tories never mentioned this during the local elections last year but now they are pushing through unpopular policies without letting tenants have any say or a vote on the plans.”
Council chiefs said lack of investment from government means they cannot bring homes up to scratch without selling off parts of the stock.
They will also announce so-called Estate Regeneration packages within the next two weeks, naming blocks that will be handed to housing associations for refurbishment.
Mr Dobson said: “At last we are making progress and last week, when all six Labour Party Deputy Leadership candidates visited Camden, we heard Government Ministers promise to look into this issue as a matter of urgency.
“Yet Camden’s Lib Dems and Tories have thrown in the towel. They have made it clear that they would rather just flog-off homes to the highest bidder at the very moment we might get what Camden’s tenants and leaseholders want. I would urge them to re-think their policies until the new Prime Minister’s housing policy becomes clearer.”
