Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 12 July 2007

Protect the park

COUNCILLORS should spontaneously adopt and pursue good ideas. Why do they need pressure groups before acting?
Not so long ago, a private developer announced he was going to drive a road through Talacre Gardens to facilitate his development at Dalby Street. This would have sliced our park in two and ruined this precious amenity.
The coalition finally said ‘no’, but only after a stiff campaign by local residents which lasted months. The idea outraged so many people borough-wide that the New Journal was soon inundated with scores of letters.  Why is it that we elect a council only to then have to constantly watch our backs to ensure the same elected body acts in our best interests?
By the same token, how is it that the Liberal Democrat/Tory coalition has not rushed to protect our park when the new Commons Act 2006 came into effect on April 6 this year?
This legislation was written to make such a registration voluntary, quick and simple. Yet the council is making heavy weather of it.
Am I missing something here? No one in their right mind, except perhaps somebody waiting to steal the park, would object to its protection.
Is it any wonder that only a few local residents in Haverstock ward are inspired to vote for anyone? Blaming Town Hall officials for apathy is only part of the story.
