Heavens above! downpour at church fete fails to dampen revellers’ spirits

FOR only the third time in the history of St Mary Brookfield church fete, the heavens opened – and did not stop.
Reverend Guy Pope, parish priest at the church in Dartmouth Park Road for 20 years, laughed off the constant rain at Saturday’s fete.
He said: “The weather was appalling, it didn’t stop. It was a good thing we decided to move it indoors.”
At £800, the fete raised slightly less than at other times in its 15-years, owing to the bad weather, said Reverend Pope. But he was pleased at the number of young families unfamiliar to him who turned up to enjoy the games, bouncy castle and face-painting.
The barbecue stayed outside this time. “We did have it inside one year but it all got a bit smokey,” said Reverend Pope.
