Pavement tribute to worker killed in fight

Candles lit by colleagues remembering ‘a special man’

WORKMATES have lit candles outside a Euston Road pub in tribute to a building worker who died in a fight last Wednesday night.
Craftsmen and labourers spent their lunch break on Thursday mourning fellow worker Laurenthiu Maroleanu.
The Romanian-born 33-year-old died of head injuries at about 11.30pm the previous night outside the Rocket pub, at the corner with Chalton Street, Somers Town. A 28-year-old man has been charged with his murder.
Fighting the wind and rain, six men in the fluorescent bibs and hard hats worn by workers at the Channel Tunnel Rail Link project lit candles on the pavement in memory of the window-fitter and father-of-one.
Mr Maroleanu had gone for a drink at the Rocket with workmates at the end of his shift and was caught up in a fight that began in the pub and spilled outside, his colleagues said.
Police confirmed that when they were called to reports of a disturbance, Mr Maroleanu was found on the ground outside the pub alongside another man, who was arrested. Despite urgent treatment for head injuries, Mr Maroleanu was pronounced dead at the scene.
Workmates described Mr Maroleanu – known as Lorenzo – as a “hard-working, family man”.
He had worked at the Channel Tunnel Rail Link project for six months after moving his wife and one-year-old daughter to London from his native Romania, and settling in north Harrow.
“He was a very nice person, a special man,” said one colleague. “This is no way for a life to end, no way for a family to be left. We are remembering him today but it is still a great shock.”
The Rocket was closed on Thursday as forensic experts and detectives sifted through evidence inside and interviewed staff.
Paul Eduard Alucai, 28, appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Saturday charged with murder. He is understood to be a worker at the Channel Tunnel Rail Link project.
