At last, a life without smoke

• EILEEN Earnshaw wonders “what historians will make of July 1, 2007” (Smoking is simply part of our daily routine, June 28).
I should imagine they will consider the decision to ban smoking – only in enclosed public places not in people’s homes – as one of the most progressive laws the government has passed for a long time, protecting the non-smoking majority from the smoking minority.
I’m sorry to learn that giving up smoking will seriously damage her health but I wonder how many other people, during her 60-year smoking career, have had their health seriously damaged by her smoking.
Part of my daily routine for almost as long as she has been smoking has been trying to avoid smoking. In my case living with a smoking father was followed by working with smokers and, for a great part of my youth, living with them in hostels and shared flats.
Surely, any fair-minded person would have to agree that it’s high time the welfare and rights of non-smokers were made paramount.
