Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published:28 June 2007

Lessons of the car permit saga

•  IT is to be hoped that your piece (Parents lose fight to save park permits, June 21) will draw this saga to a close. During the last six months of the previous Labour administration, during which hundreds of angry letters were sent by school-runners to councillors, the hope was that with the arrival of a new administration the years of debate and the subsequent consultations would be scrapped by a new car-friendly coalition.
They got this very wrong.
They must have since noticed the rise in childhood obesity, the growing crassness of imaginary dangers on every street corner and have surely become more aware of climate change. The decision that was made by the whole council last week to continue the withdrawal of parking permits, in spite of a small compromise, was overwhelmingly the correct one. Local residents in the Fitzjohn’s Avenue area should be pleased.
Tribute should be paid to those councillors, including Mike Greene, who have seen this run through. Officers such as Simon Bishop, Camden’s school run travel co-ordinator, have been particularly committed. It is to be hoped that STAG, the pressure group, can now work more productively with the council. However, it still seems beyond hope that most headteachers will warn prospective parents of Camden’s policy, will establish genuine green travel plans, or will even consider decamping from their ‘Educational Business Park’ in NW3 to the wider catchment areas in Islington, Muswell Hill and Brent.
