Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published:28 June 2007

We need action on crime, not just facts and figures

•  I SYMPATHISE greatly with the anonymous letter (Gangs will force us to move to new area, June 14) about the fear the gangs are bringing to the Camden estates. I have been in a similar situation myself in a council estate in east London.
I want to highlight two major public services that continue to fail to tackle these social problems. (Ironically I was reading the New Journal on the bus home after I had reported my motorbike stolen to the police.)
In response to the letter from Mr Faggs of the Gospel Oak Safer Neighbourhoods Citizens Panel (GOSNCP), I’d like to comment on how he was quick to sing the praises of his panel’s progress yet did not offer any sympathy to the people still suffering at the hands of anti-social behaviour.
The tone of his letter says it all to me, and I hope also to the people who read it. Even if you don’t care Mr Faggs, at least talk like you do for the residents you claim to represent.
Good work has been done but there is a long way to go. I would like Chris Fagg of the GOSNCP panel to spend a day in the environment of the suffering residents as I wonder if his tone would change.
Another inefficiency is worth highlighting. As I was reporting my stolen bike to a young officer, he informed me that the bike-stealing gang has a race track where many stolen bikes end up. However, the police cannot get there because their vehicles won’t fit through the gate onto the track. Need I say more?
Before I mailed this letter I read the last New Journal, which is full of more stories of anti-social behaviour.
How much more suffering will the authorities allow before things are done without hiding behind meaningless facts and figures?
