Talking of cleaners, what are your policies on the basic services needed to keep hospitals and schools clean and safe?

Hazel Blears	We've invested in schools and hospitals, built and repaired thousands of buildings, and employed tens of thousands of new doctors, nurses, and teachers.

Jon Cruddas	We need to ensure that the people who work in services, such as cleaning, are paid a living wage. Any private companies we do use to support the public sector must be required to maintain the latter’s employment standards, and that there are sufficient staff and resources to ensure that services such as cleaning are able to be performed properly. There should be a moratorium on the role and the extent of the involvement of the private sector in the direct provision of public services.

Peter Hain	As Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, I exempted cleaning and catering staff from PFI contracts to ensure that private investment was not at the expense of workers’ terms and conditions or cleanliness in hospitals.

Harriet Harman	Good hospitals and schools in every area that are clean, safe and effective are vital. The Government should make sure that standards are set, checks are made and resources are available. But it is the teachers, nurses and cleaners who are on the job every day and understand what needs to be done to make hospitals and schools places to which we want to send our sick or our children. I value the public service ethos in schools and hospitals and across our public services and I want to make sure that these services are not fractured by contracts being farmed out.

Alan Johnson	THE priority for me is to keep hospitals just that- clean and safe. We need to make sure that these services are cost effective and provide high standards and we should use the best systems to achieve this.
