How will you provide the regular public transport we were promised instead of the need to use cars?

Hazel Blears	Labour has invested in the tube and buses, as well as trams. I want to see Crossrail go ahead. We need to look at bus deregulation in cities outside of London, which has not been a happy experience.

Jon Cruddas	As part of this election campaign I have put forward my belief that the train operating companies should be progressively brought back into the public sector as franchises come up for renewal, and services being run on a ‘not for profit’ basis. We should make progress on an integrated transport policy –it is crucial for the environment that we reduce car usage, but we will only achieve this if we have a public transport network that is safe, affordable and reliable.

Peter Hain	Public transport in London, buses in particular, has improved enormously in recent years – but we need to do better. I believe Crossrail is essential. And I’d also like to see projects like the Cross-River Transit given the go-ahead.

Harriet Harman	We must continue to invest more in public transport. London has demonstrated the way with the use of the car declining and public transport increasing.

Alan Johnson	We do need to use public transport more and cars less- especially when we consider the urgency of the climate change issue. On the railways, we have worked to ensure that we have more control over network maintenance. We do need to do more to encourage alternative means of transport- including more bus lanes and cycle lanes.
