Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published:21 June 2007

Tube routes can be split

• YET again a near-miss was averted when a train almost collided with another when it was on the wrong track.
May I make a simple suggestion based on what London Underground Ltd did a few years ago when a train derailed and hit the wall of a tunnel.
For some three months following this accident all Northern line trains ran on two clearly-defined routes.
Trains on the High Barnet branch ran via Charing Cross and trains on the Edgware branch via Bank.
Not only did this avoid the need for trains to be switched from one track to another, it made life much easier and safer for passengers.
Camden Town station, approximately 100 years old, may well have been more than capable of handling its flow of passengers at that time but this now has increased out of all proportion.
The station is basically still as it was then and it would appear that it will be many years before it may be rebuilt and this would not be an overnight transformation.
Remember Mornington Crescent station? One of the smallest on the system but its refurbishment took almost 18 months.
I would recommend that Transport for London seriously considers permanently running these trains on the clearly-defined routes as mentioned above.
It may not be a perfect solution but would go a little way towards making a safer and more tolerable life for those using one of London’s busiest and most confusing tube stations.
