Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published:14 June 2007

Why we have to spend wisely

ON June 27, Camden’s Executive will be giving £6.2million to the local voluntary and community sector in Camden. This decision will mark the end of a lengthy review of the way in which the Council gives funding to the voluntary sector. Over the last year, we have met and consulted with the sector through workshops, consultation meetings and briefings.
We have worked together to agree the best way to use this funding to provide services for our residents.
We have tried to be as inclusive as possible and have listened to what organisations and other partners have had to say.
In response, we extended and amended the process because people told us that they needed time to adjust to the change in the way in which we give this
money.
We are happy that we have been able to open up the funding to new organisations in Camden that provide excellent services which complement the aspirations of the partnership administration. This does mean that there will be some changes but I am confident that the new process will result in new ways of providing services which will be of benefit to all residents.
We recognise that the voluntary and community sector is a valuable partner in helping us to deliver on our priorities to support local people.
Camden has been, and continues to be a generous funder of the VCS, but we have embraced the challenge of making sure that this money is spent properly and effectively.
We haven’t taken the easy option of simply continuing to fund everything that was funded before.
We believe that it is also important that funding provides support across the whole community, as well as recognising that in some cases more tailored and specific services are needed.
I hope people will see how we have striven to cut out duplication, encourage innovation and strengthen the contribution that the sector can make.
