Camden New Journal -
Published: 7 June 2007

The Camden New Journal scooped the prestigious press award for a second time back in 2005
New Journal again saluted in awards shortlist

THE New Journal has once again been shortlisted for the prestigious Free Newspaper of the Year award at the industry Oscars.
It is the sixth time in eight years the newspaper has been nominated for the award. Organised by the Press Gazette, the media industry’s own newspaper, the awards are highly valued because the winners are chosen by other journalists. In the last year, the New Journal – a winner twice in the past – has lived up to its reputation with in-depth and sensitive coverage of the electrocution of scaffolder Ralph Kennedy on a Somers Town estate and the Kentish Town murder of Tommy Winston. Investigations have uncovered the scandal of the way elderly people’s belongings have been handled by the council after their death, revealed plans to sell care homes and exposed the frailties in the way Camden police operate.
The New Journal regularly includes late-night exclusives – most recently capturing the drama of a ferocious fire in a King’s Cross hostel. The Review section has got bigger and brighter, while extensive letters pages give residents a real voice. Perhaps the most notable addition in the last year, the paper’s 25th, has been the recruitment of the world’s oldest columnist, Rose Hacker.
Winners will be revealed on June 29
