Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published:7 June 2007

I never agreed to the ‘music ban'

• I AM writing about the two recent articles concerning the “music ban” on the Curnock Street Estate on May 24 and May 31.
My name is Mrs Nikki Wake and I am the person interviewed and photographed in the original article and I want to set the record straight about the “generalised” comments attributed to me on this subject by your reporter.
The result of this interview made it appear that I agreed with this ridiculous sign, which at the time appeared to be a total ban on music.
At the outset of the interview I clearly told your reporter that (a) I have only lived on the estate for just over a year; and (b) that I don’t really go out very much, so therefore my knowledge of what happens around here is very limited.
My comments about the estate being quiet were true as I have not had any problems at all.
I think it is a lovely place to live.
Yes, I also made comments about the residents being old.
I was speaking about my neighbours and not the whole estate as implied by your reporter.
Peter Brayshaw in his letter (‘Music ban’ is out of tune, May 31), reiterates that comment “the residents are mostly elderly”, which is what I said but there are also quite obviously young residents as well.
I agree with Peter Brayshaw about the efforts being made to reduce rowdy intrusions from outside our estate.
The result is this article, regarding me personally, has caused me very unpleasant problems which I had never experienced before I helped your reporter with the story. These problems are from other residents of the estate who I have never met and don’t even know but who were upset about comments I was meant to have made.
At no time did I say that I ever agreed with a total music ban.
As far as I’m concerned people are entitled to play music if they want to, just the same as me, so long as it’s not a nuisance to everybody else.
I think that is something everybody would expect.
