Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published:7 June 2007

Did I really see bobby in High Street?

• YESTERDAY morning I witnessed a rare sight. There was a genuine bobby in Camden High Street.
I visit the High Street nearly every day but normally the only time the police are in evidence is shortly before 4pm when there is always a crowd of “pretend” policemen and women, alias support officers, making sure that as many tickets as possible are issued to motorists who may not have left the kerbside in time.
The last time I saw a genuine police officer in Camden was several weeks ago when, within an hour, I witnessed on two occasions groups of them apprehending a motorist.
I have seen no evidence of the general increased police presence we are told we now have.
It seems the most serious crime one can commit in Camden is to own and use a car, but then giving motorists tickets is an easy money-spinner, whereas combating real crime involves expenditure. This may seem a cynical view, but the evidence seems to indicate it is a correct one.
