Camden New Journal - by CATHERINE ETOE

The power ’s too much for challenger Ward

SAINT Pancras boxer Martin ‘Too Much’ Power successfully defended his British Bantamweight title in an electric fight at York Hall on Tuesday night. Power, unbeaten in 19 fights, beat challenger Isaac Ward from Darlington in an eighth round stoppage. “It’s been a long time since I fought and I could be a bit fitter,” Power said afterwards. “The last two fights were harder and that’s not taking anything away from Isaac.” If he wasn’t feeling in top condition, Power didn’t show it. Ward fought hard to stay in the fight but the referee stopped the contest when Power stepped up a gear in the eighth.
Promoter Frank Maloney said of Ward: “He was too brave for
his own good.” It was the Camden Town fighter’s second successful title defence and the belt could be his if he wins a third time. The 26-year-old said: “I’m one defence away and then it’s mine for good.” Power now expects to fight again in June to stay in shape but said he has a European title in his sights.
