School with a literary bent wins place in inspectors’ good books

PUPILS and staff at a Hampstead primary are celebrating after their school was judged “outstanding” in a recent Ofsted inspectors’ report.
Christ Church Primary, a Church of England voluntary-aided school in Christ Church Hill, received the highest possible mark in all but one of the categories it was judged on – making it one of the most successful schools in Camden.
Ofsted inspectors said Christ Church, with 190 pupils on its roll, was an “outstanding church school with a distinctly Christian ethos, where all members of the community are valued”.
Despite describing its Victorian buildings as “very cramped with space at a premium”, inspectors said: “The staff consistently display high standards and expect the same from the children.”
Inspectors praised the positive attitudes shown by pupils and the high quality of care and guidance from teachers. Their only suggestion for further improvements was for staff “to refine target setting of pupils’ learning and to track more effectively their progress over time”.
Delighted headteacher Linda Carter said: “This was a real team effort and I include the pupils and parents when I say that. We have continued to make exceptional progress as a school. It is a great honour to be judged as outstanding in so many categories.”
Meanwhile, the school celebrated the end of its annual literary week on Friday with a visit from author Deborah Moggach, who helped launch an anthology of poems written by year four pupils.
Children dressed up as their favourite book characters, with several drawing on the Harry Potter books for inspiration.
Deputy headteacher Mark Stubbings, who organised the event, said: “We have had a really action-packed week. Deborah was such an inspiration to the children. They have worked so hard to complete their book and were really excited to have her at the launch.”
