Vandals attack plaque to rebel MP

VANDALS have destroyed a plaque marking the spot where a 17th-century rebel MP was beheaded.
Lord William Russell, MP for Tavistock, was executed for plotting to kill Charles II in 1683.
A plaque marking the scene of the execution in Lincoln’s Inn Fields is to be replaced following the vandals’ attack.
Lord Russell, an outspoken Republican, was tried for his part in the Rye House Plot to assassinate the king.
He was sent to the Tower of London and sentenced to death by decapitation.
A baying crowd gathered to watch the execution in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. Winding his watch from the podium, Lord Russell said: “I’m done with time and now I’m going to eternity”.
