Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 31 May 2007

Time to push clocks ahead

• A FEW weeks ago, I was lucky enough to enjoy the good weather and the company of friends at a barbecue.
Though less a month away from the longest day of the year, this being England meant that by about 8.45 pm we either had to go inside or sit in the dark. Waking early the next morning (a bit the worse for wear) the light was streaming through the window. The time? Just after 4.30 am.
I know things are a little different in the north of Scotland, but the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents estimates that if we were to move our clocks forward one hour to match those of our European neighbours, it would save almost 500 road deaths and serious injuries a year.
Think of the ecological benefits too: within our homes, up to an hour’s less lighting and heating needed each day; at bars and restaurants, an hour less of those ghastly and wasteful outside heaters. More selfishly, we would also be able to enjoy later evenings and not be woken by the light so early in the morning.
I would like to know whether Camden’s residents would support me involving the Council in a campaign to persuade the Government to trial a change to European Time for a two to three year period, as was done from 1968 to 1971.
If you feel strongly about this, either for or against, please write to this paper or email me at mike.greene@camden.gov.uk to let me know.
