Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 31 May 2007

Rose, pursuit of profit is thorn in our side

• I APPLAUD Rose Hacker for her excellent column last week, detailing how ‘The pursuit of profit has led to a poorer quality of care’.
The Labour party, the Tories and the Lib Dems have entrenched and strengthened the position of market forces here and across the globe and put profit at the heart of our society. Our taxes now have to pay for the profits of companies involved in schools, healthcare and many council services, and our hard-earned income is paying for the windfall profits of water and other utility companies.
Investors in our housing market, free of any restrictions, have priced millions of people out of the housing market.
People are more stressed, having to work harder to get by and, in particular, more women are having to work while bringing up a family.
The wisespread pursuit of maximum profit is leading to a poorer quality of life for most while the rich get richer still.
Examples from last week include the Lib Dem/Tory administration announcing plans to sell off council properties against tenants’ wishes and breaking their own pre-election pledge, houseboats and their families set to be evicted from Goods Way in King’s Cross by the end of June, when London and Continental Railways had said up until now that they could stay, and the judicial review into the King’s Cross failing.
It also seems that the greater the amount of profit at stake, the less ethics and justice matter.
