Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 31 May 2007

We still believe in a school for Euston

• RESIDENT'S frustrated response at Camden Council’s consultation meeting on their Building Schools for the Future bid last Thursday shows that, despite John Bryant and Andrew Mennear’s repeated attempts to brush aside residents demands for a secondary school south of the Euston road, we still think building a new school here is possible.
Why do we think it is possible?
Because the need is proven. Because the support of residents from all parts of the community is overwhelming.
Because the government is making education a priority now, and they are spending a lot of money on it.
The people of Camden who turn up to consultation meetings (despite very poor publicity) to have their say do so because they believe that they are taking part in a democratic process.
Andrew Mennear’s response to the question “will our views change your Building the Schools for the Future bid?” was that our views will feed in to the way Camden will approach the Dfes in the future.
How can it be a proper democratic consultation if the views of those consulted don’t make the slightest bit of difference to the matter in hand?
In my view it is  a case of ‘consult half heartedly, and ignore’.
If anyone is in any doubt about the strength of feeling expressed at the meeting, I suggest they look at the verbatim record of people’s views, which is available from Camden Council, or on the school campaign website at www.whereismyschool.org.uk
