Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 24 May 2007

Keep religion private

• REGARDING Robin Young’s letter (Muslims pay taxes and so have rights, May 17) I don’t understand why he has to mention he is a Liberal Democrat to offer his point of view on Mr Alford’s letter of the previous week – could it be a vote spinner? Does he really care?

In my opinion he has completely missed the point and prefers to rant on about how the taxpayer should be given equal rights and to make personal jibes.
I agree with Mr Alford and feel it is a very dangerous step to to allow citizens favours because of their religious belief. There are at least 80 religions and sects and more than 300 gods and goddesses on this planet and you can be sure there are believers in every single one of them. Where does Mr Young want to draw the line? Do we cater for them all? I say no, we shouldn’t cater for any of them – one’s beliefs are personal and private and under no circumstances should they be allowed to dictate to anyone in the public sector. It creates separatism as opposed to unity and will only lead to more tragedies like 7/7. Is this what you want, Mr Young?
I think it would be better, especially in schools, for there to be a universal worship service where there is a lighting of a candle to celebrate all the religions and ways of this world, including non-believers, in a secular fashion and to stop this bowing down to the demands/requests being made by individual groups in society. This is the way to go in the future, regardless of whether you are a taxpayer or not.
