Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 24 May 2007

Swimming gone at a stroke

• WHAT a mess Camden Council have made of school swimming.
Now there are rumours that Swiss Cottage swimming baths will be closed in June – a very important swimming month for primary school pupils, just before their summer holidays.
And even when Swiss Cottage is open some primary schools can’t use it because Camden won’t stump up the cost of bussing the children to and from the baths. I suppose they expect them to walk, even when it would take them an hour or more to get there and another hour to walk back. Fat lot of time that would leave for the other activities of the school day.
All this is because Councillor Flick Rea rushed into the closure of Prince of Wales baths. It is no answer to say there was a risk – the question is whether the risk could be properly controlled. There is risk in everything in life – every time you cross the road there’s a risk you might be run over.
There is certainly risk in walking children to the swimming baths, but when the risk can be properly dealt with and controlled, we go ahead and get on with our lives. Cllr Rea never considered whether the risk at Prince of Wales baths could have been dealt with on a temporary basis.
If the report showed that was impossible, why has the report always been kept secret?
