Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 10 May 2007

I’ll never shop in Camden again

• A WHILE back I parked in Camden, and was stung for £165.
The crazy thing is that I followed the signage policy of Barnet, but didn’t realise that Camden and Barnet use the same signs in different ways.

I was a victim of the ticket’n’clamp policy of Camden, in which they applied both the ticket and clamp ticket in the same minute (12:29).
According to Camden, the ticket allows them to clamp as soon as they like after application, in this case, seconds, and I should have read the ticket (in the space of the few seconds).
When I asked why they carried out a ticket’n’clamp, the answer was, in effect, because they can.
Well, that was the last time I went shopping in Camden, whereas before I was at least once or twice a month in Camden, spending hundreds of pounds (or more) a year.
Still, I did get a laugh, when the meter maid asked me how to spell London (and still got it wrong).
Camden’s attempts to extort money from people like me has backfired, the result is that shops are closing down or moving.
There is an alternative: allow free parking for up to 30 minutes in spaces immediately outside shops, with longer term charged parking on other streets.
This will allow a throughput of shoppers, hopefully arrest the decline of shops, and bring money back into Camden.
If not the then the ‘kebabshopisation’ of Camden will continue, unabated.
