Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 3 May 2007

Tax divide is not yet decided

• DUDLEY Miles said he shared Father Hawkins’ distress at the reduced funding by the Liberal Democrat-Conservative Partnership administration for Camden Community Law Centre (Don’t shift the blame for higher council tax, April 19), but this is not an accurate portrayal of the situation.

The funding for the Law Centre, like other voluntary sector organisations, is not yet decided.
This week the Law Centre and other bodies who have applied for funding will be meeting council officers to discuss their proposals for funding, before staff assess the detailed commissioning bids in detail and the council’s executive takes final decisions on how much to fund the Law Centre and other organisations in June.
I can well understand, given the volume of media coverage, that people feel the decisions must have been taken already. In fact these decisions haven’t yet been made.
In retrospect, maybe the timetable for our voluntary sector funding review was too extended.
But we certainly can’t be accused of rushing decisions through without extensive consultation with the voluntary sector and consideration by councillors.
Cllr ANDREW MARSHALL
Deputy Leader of the Council
