Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 3 May 2007

Lesson of Barney has not been learned

• AFTER the tragic death of Barney Kennedy (Barney: who cut the wire?, April 19), and the electrocution (one fatal) of two dogs by a live lamppost in Prince of Wales Road, you’d think Camden Council would be pulling out all the stops to make sure no such accidents happen again. But it seems not.

Just behind my house a thick electric wire crosses diagonally from one side to the other of a small cobbled street, Jeffreys Place.
It’s been there for years, and always used to be secured about 35ft above ground level.
But during the heavy winds around last Christmas the wire broke loose from some of its fixings and drooped in a curve towards the ground.  Subsequent winds loosened it further, and it now hangs about 10ft above the ground.
The next strong gust will probably bring it within reach of anyone walking past – or a truck passing along Jeffreys Place may rip it loose.
I’ve now contacted the council four times about this wire, asking them to send someone to look at it and, either fix it back up where it should be, or remove it altogether.
But so far, no one’s come near it.
Of course, the wire may be harmless and carry no current – but I for one would like to be sure of that.
And I’d have thought the council would want to be sure of it, too.
