Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 26 April 2007

Dogs aren’t the problem

• IN Highgate lately I have passed notices of a perceived problem with dogs in Waterlow Park. I do not have a dog, but believe any government that banned good folk from keeping dogs in our cities would fall instantly.

The real problem in Waterlow Park is some pretty ghastly children who yell and shriek continually, such that it pains the human ear. What must it do for wildlife (and dogs) whose hearing is more acute?
These children run amok over flower beds, pulling at plants, clambering in shrubs and trees, yanking branches and foliage roughly (even now as birds are nesting) and kicking footballs savagely. Some are worryingly disinhibited. Any reasonable request for them to desist is met with abuse from parents as much as their brats.
If anyone wants to play football, a short walk down Swain’s Lane will bring you to Parliament Hill Fields’ acres of dedicated ground. Please spare Waterlow’s garden.
Then there is the school for ill-dressed waiters – boys in black trousers with white shirts hanging out; and the girl’s school with a its dubious brown uniform – skirts near crotch length and pasty legs, even in winter. Have these girls no savvy?
Waterlow Park is “a garden for the gardenless”. Both schools have spacious and attractive grounds of their own. Could pupils not go there after school? It is dreadful when they spill into the park mid-afternoon and stay on for hours into the evening – I hear park staff have had some unsavoury problems with them too.
The dogs would seem more civilised.
