Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 April 2007

‘A bicycle in a park is not like a Panzer tank division’

• REGARDING the letter from Stephen Plowden (‘Heath no place for cyclists’, Letters April 12) objecting that extending the Heath’s cycle routes will disturb walkers.
Firstly, why assume that the Heath should be primarily reserved for the enjoyment of walkers? Surely this precious green space was fought over and preserved for the benefit of all Londoners.
Secondly, there is no reason why bicycles should be singled out as a disturbance. A bicycle is not a Panzer division.
There are places all over the world where cyclists and walkers share space quite happily.
The same is true of those paths where bicycles are allowed on the Heath. I cannot see why this civilised arrangement should not be extended to all the paths on the Heath.

• GIVEN that the Tavistock Square cycle route is not so being much dug up as demolished by Thames Water, would now be a good time to address the dangerous road design at the corner of Judd Street, where cars cross over the path of cyclists? Some alternative road design might stop a death or serious injury.
