Young gardeners are pick of the springtime bunch
THE Highgate Horticultural Society spring show was a great success for the Harington Scheme last Saturday, when the Highgate-based training programme for young people with learning disabilities picked up eight first prizes and a diploma for horticultural excellence.
The team of six trainees and two trainers took top spot in the planted bulbs, cut mixed flowers and cactus and succulents categories.
Horticultural trainer John Fairweather, who was part of the entry team, said: “Our award for horticultural excellence proves we are doing a great job here.”
Horticultural manager Rob Lucas added: “It’s really nice to get some recognition locally. The six trainees feel great. They can’t believe how much satisfaction people got from their hard work.”
The show, staged in Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution in South Grove, is in its 148th year.
Society treasurer Anne Dallman was particularly pleased with the daffodil entries this year.
She said: “They were so big this year. I think it must be the mild weather we’ve had.”
She won first prize for a bowl of long trumpet daffodils, beating her husband Alan, society chairman, who nevertheless left with 17 firsts.
The summer show takes place on July 14 at the United Reformed Church in Highgate.
