Second try for pub that wants to be a karaoke bar
THE owner of a karaoke bar in Camden Town who had his application refused by licensing chiefs two months ago is preparing for a second fight at the Town Hall.
On Monday Adrian Hindson will have another go at convincing councillors that he should be allowed to reopen the Royal Exchange in Hartland Road, after he was warned his first application was “not thought out enough” by panel chairman Councillor Jonathan Simpson.
Cllr Simpson had concerns that the form had been filled out with generic answers by his solicitors, and was worried that Mr Hindson had not met with neighbours.
Objectors living nearby were also alarmed at the proximity of a primary school, and the pub’s previous chequered history.
Under the company name Addy Limited, Mr Hindson and his wife bought the premises and have already spent thousands of pounds soundproofing it and fitting it with high-tech karaoke equipment and crystal chandeliers.
Objector vice-chair of governors at Holy Trinity and St Silas, Julia Clark, told the council: “The governors are concerned about the likely levels of ‘morning after’ detritus such as broken bottles, vomit and condoms arising directly from the premises’ night operation. All of this would, again, be visible to pupils aged four to eleven when arriving at school.”
Mr Hindson has agreed to open at 4 pm in concession to fears that drinkers could disturb youngsters at the school if they opened earlier. He wants to serve alcohol until 11.30 pm from Sunday to Thursday, and midnight on Friday and Saturday.
He has asked for ‘seasonal variation’ at Asian New Year. His solicitor Mark Browning said: “The premises have been extensively refitted to a very high standard by the applicant and have been noise insulated. It is his intention to operate as a venue for the Asian community… The applicant has installed state of the at CCTV cameras, has conducted a full review of noise issues.”
