Hospital leak remains a mystery

INVESTIGATORS are no closer to discovering the root of a mystery substance leak which struck down 19 staff, despite suffering a third public health scare this week.
The Royal Free Hospital has been at the centre of in-depth investigations since last week when an unknown substance forced the hospital to close twice.
Staff and patients reeling from last week’s scares were on high alert on Tuesday, raising the alarm as soon as a solvent odour began to creep across the first floor.
But instead of last week’s mystery smell, which left staff feeling nauseous and dizzy, the root of the problem was quickly attributed to floor glue. Hospital chiefs have deemed Tuesday’s alert – traced to workmen refurbishing the first floor – to be unconnected.
The Health Protection Agency and the Health and Safety Executive has been brought in to help investigate the cause of last week’s alerts, which brought the hospital to a halt as firefighters and police searched for the source of the problem.
