Delayed skate park finally opens

A MUCH-DELAYED skateboard and BMX park opened on Friday in Camden Road. The new BMX area was designed by a group of skateboarders and financed by grants from Camden Council, Sport England and the John Lyons Charitable Trust.
The gardens have been given a £1.5m facelift and the project was delayed as the cash took time to raise.
Executive member for culture Councillor Flick Rea said: “We are sorry it has taken a long time to get together but when something has to be absolutely right like this it does take time.”
Skater Leon Watson, 20, who travelled from Essex to be at the opening said: “It’s a lot better. It was flat banks before and now they have mini ramps, banks, everything.”
Matt Elms, of the Cantelocals skateboarding group, said: “From the beginning we set out to get the best skate park we could – by taking the best aspects from the original park and modern design.
“This is the only concrete skate park in the UK to have this combination of banks, street areas and bowls – including a feature called a “cradle”, which allows BMX-ers to ride upside down.”
