Letters to the Editor

I feel far safer in New York

• I AM a frequent visitor to the UK and I usually stay in Camden. I read your story on police numbers with interest and disbelief (‘Secret’ plan to cut cops, March 23).
Councillor Jake Sumner claims that crime has gone down in Camden in the past four years by 14 per cent.
On my way to visit Camden Lock this week with my teenage son this was not apparent. I was horrified at the number of times drug-dealers openly accosted us offering all manner of illicit substances, including crack. There was an atmosphere of danger and sleaziness about the whole area. I feel infinitely safer in New York, even in the worst parts, than in Camden.
How can Chief Supt Heath claim that crime has been reduced in these past few years and even brag about having done a good job? Camden is a ‘no go’ area for any decent, law abiding resident or visitor to your city.
