Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 29 March 2007

Delighted to see this plan thrown out

• LAST Thursday, I was delighted to support my neighbours in beating the council’s planning bureaucracy.

As you reported, we were campaigning against a monstrous and ugly proposed development in the middle of a beautiful Victorian conservation area.
The supposedly upmarket design involved unsightly concrete columns next to Victorian facades.
It is extraordinary that council planners decided to recommend this awful design in the middle of a conservation area.
Local resident Chris Hopson and I both spoke at the planning committee meeting against the application, supported by about 30 of our neighbours who had come along.
I am delighted that the Committee, chaired by my colleague Cllr Dawn Somper, unanimously rejected the application, which was quite literally laughed out of court.
This is a great victory for local residents against the planning bureaucracy. I hope that council planners are much more careful before unwisely supporting this kind of outrageous application in the future. We are all lucky to have so many beautiful areas in the neighbourhood. We must be careful to conserve them.
