Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 29 March 2007

Language should be of benefit

• THE head of a Camden school calls for the introduction of a GCSE in the Somali language.

This idea will not achieve the ‘level playing field’ that is intended and will, in the long term, do a disservice to Somali pupils.
As a matter of priorities, immigrant minorities should be given every support and encouragement to acquire mastery of the English language to assist their careers.
Resources put toward the teaching of minority languages are better directed toward the teaching of Mandarin from which all students will benefit.
