'Cesc Fabregas a cert for Young Player of the Year'

Wenger heaps praise on Spanish sensation after great performance

ARSENE Wenger believes that the performance of Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas should earn him the title of Young Player of the Year, and has said that Arsenal’s rising star is a certainty to scoop the award this season.

Despite Thierry Henry netting an impressive brace on Sunday, it was Fabregas who was the most impressive against third-place Liverpool.
The Spanish sensation scooped the man of the match magnum with a champagne performance, which drew praise from his manager.
Wenger said: “Cesc displayed some quality passing and was outstanding to watch. I feel his passes are becoming very influential. It is pleasing to see he has a more physical presence in the game. I’ve seen a lot of young players start and he’s one of the best. He is a certainty for Young Player of the Year.”
At just 18 years of age, the midfielder – who picked up his first national team cap last week – has had pundits drooling over his potential.
Wenger snatched Fabregas from under the nose of Spanish giants Barcelona in August 2003 and he went on to make Arsenal history that year as the youngest player ever to play in the first team.
In 2004, he signed a new long-term deal with the Gunners but has since been linked with Real Madrid, with the possibility of David Beckham moving in the opposite direction to Ashburton Grove.
After the Liverpool game, Wenger reiterated his desire to keep Fabregas and rubbished speculation concerning the England captain by dismissing the links with Beckham as an example of the poetic license of the press.
He said: “I said Beckham is a player I like and he can hit a good cross. I think you have seen the creative side of the press. But we have players that can play now. We have some that are very good and we want to give them a chance.
“It is finding the balance of development and mature players.”
