Stars back theatre that shines spotlight on young people

ACTORS Alison Steadman, Roger Lloyd Pack and Sian Phillips were among famous faces at a fundraising gala at Hampstead Theatre on Thursday.
The three joined a celebrity line-up that included BBC radio personalities Ned Sherrin and Clement Freud, BBC creative director Alan Yentob and broadcaster Joan Bakewell for a performance of the theatre’s current production, King of Hearts, by satirist Alistair Beaton.
Afterwards, some 300 guests were treated to dinner followed by an auction and raffle. Prizes included a red Piaggio scooter and a poster of the latest Harry Potter film signed by actor Alan Rickman.
The event raised more than £40,000 for the theatre’s creative learning project, which provides artistic opportunities for thousands of young people.
The theatre’s artistic director, Anthony Clark, said: “It was a fantastic turnout for the theatre and what it does to support the community.
“Hampstead Theatre is not just about entertainment but about a whole series of activities for young people to take part in.”
