Anaconda young stars go close in gordon trophy

ANACONDA Swimmers came within touching distance of retaining the Gordon Trophy at the weekend in a closely fought contest in Haringey.
Winners of the competition last year, the club, based at the Cally Pool in Caledonian Road, just missed out on glory as they finished 13 points behind Edmonton Phoenix.
Among the record breaking winners for Anaconda was Gabriel Cramer, who swam to victory in both the under-14 50m backstroke and freestyle events. In the under-16 division Sarah Taylor-Reid touched home first in the 50m breaststroke, while Joe Grubb won the under-12 50m freestyle.
Anaconda continued to win medals in the under-12 age group as Wayne Lock struck gold in both his 50m breaststroke and butterfly races, while Dominic McLoughlin won the 50m breaststroke. There were also a string of silver medals as Jessie Baker, Harley Greer, Josh Wright, Julia Taylor, Kathleen Bartha, Clare Walton and John Rivers all finished second.
In an evening of fantastic team performances Anaconda won or came second in 10 of the 17 relays.
The girls’ squad of Baker, Taylor, Walton, Greer, Taylor-Reid, Bartha, Mei Corbett, Samara Williams, Lauren Spiers and Emma McCarthy won the under-12 and under-14 4x50m freestyle and 4x25m medley relays. The girls also clinched silver in the open 4x50m freestyle and the 4x25m medley relays.
Not to be outdone, the boys’ under-12 relay team of Grubb, McLoughlin, Tomas Sitek and Padraig Lynch won gold in the 4x50m freestyle and 4x25m medley events, while the open boys’ team of Lock, Wright, Ben Hartog and Hayden Thomas took second place in the 4x50m open freestyle relay. The Anaconda squad also swam superbly to come second in the 8x25m freestyle relay.
