Harrier beats top European

HIGHFLYING Highgate Harrier Simeon Williamson was in outstanding form at the weekend as he beat one of the country’s top European indoor runners to clinch gold in the British University Championships in Sheffield.

Running for Middlesex in the 60m sprints, Williamson finished just 3/100ths of a second outside the British University record in a winning time of 6.71, outpacing Bath’s highly rated Ryan Scott who finished second. Highgate teammate Rory Campbell also was in sparkling form, twice finishing inside two-minutes in the 800m heats for Oxford University.
Elsewhere Highgate women were in impressive form on Saturday as they finished sixth in the National Cross-Country Championships in Sunderland. Fab four Svenja Abel, Sula Young, Astrid Wingler and Louise Burnie all tackled the gruelling 8000m course in style to score valuable points for the Harriers.
In the men’s category, Henry Dodwell completed the senior 12,000m course in 42min, 18secs to finish 120th out of a field of more than 900. Club mate Eric Southam also did well, finishing 241st.
Meanwhile top Harrier Jonathan Gardner ran 19 miles and cycled a further 24 on Saturday to finish 29th of a field of 130 competitors in the Ball Buster Duathlon in Surrey, crossing the line in 3:13.27.

*RUNNERS from London Heathside were also in action on Saturday in their final major cross-country race of the season at the National Championships.
With the venue forcing Heathside to field a depleted side, it was left to Efrem Semreab to seal the club’s highest placed finish when he came 51st in the junior men’s event. Dean Manassib and Tom O’Loughlin also put in impressive runs .
Meanwhile in the men’s senior race, top trio Andy Welshman, Paul Lemmon and John Flahive were all in commanding form, to finish within two minutes of each other.
