Search is on for Heath boss

A VOTE this month will reveal who will take over as boss of Hampstead Heath, according to City of London insiders.
Catherine McGuinness, chairman of the Heath’s management committee, is stepping down from the top post in May after serving the maximum three-year term. Under normal circumstances, deputy chairman Denis Cotgrove would be expected to succeed Ms McGuinness.
But, at a Heath consultative committee meeting on Monday night, it was revealed that Mr Cotgrove, has decided to quit his post “for personal reasons”.
A City of London spokeswoman confirmed that elections for Mr Cotgrove’s post would take place at the next management committee meeting on March 27. The new deputy chairman is almost certain to replace Ms McGuinness as chairman at the elections for the post on May 22.
Only members of the City of London’s Common Council – its non-political, decision-making body – can stand for election as chairmen of its committees.
Mr Cotgrove confirmed that he would remain a member of the committee.
Ms McGuinness, who faced a fierce campaign by swimmers opposed to charging for the Heath’s ponds during her tenure, told Heath consultative committee members: “We have come a long way. We still have a way to go in terms of clarifying our finances, for example. There are challenges ahead.”
Tony Ghilchik, who represents the Heath and Hampstead Society on the management committee, said Ms McGuinness would be missed.
He added: “She had a very tough time and has done very well.”
