This place rocks, says Peter

MORE than 1,000 people have signed up for membership to the new Swiss Cottage leisure centre set to open on March 18 – and centre bosses are expecting a million visits over the next year.
The £27-million leisure centre, designed by architect Sir Terry Farrell and run by Greenwich Leisure Ltd (GLL) on behalf of Camden Council, boasts a five-a-side football pitch, two swimming pools, a two-floor gym and 14-metre climbing wall.
Plans to replace the original centre, designed by Sir Basil Spence in 1960, were submitted in 1998 and after delays because of a sit-in by protesters against the redevelopment deal work started in earnest in 2003.
User groups were unhappy with a deal with private homes developer Barratt who were given a chunk of land to help pay for the cost of the work, and fears that the centres facilities would not be as good as the ones they were replacing.
Town Hall director environment Peter Bishop (pictured testing out the new climbing wall) said: “Just come and see for yourself.”
