Battling Blues up for title

Our weekly spotlight on one of the league’s big games

TITLE-chasing Hampstead kept their hopes of winning the championship alive on Monday with a hard-fought victory over Isledon Wolves at Market Road.
In an end-to-end encounter, the first chance of the game fell to Isledon Wolves but Hampstead shot stopper Ashton Schraff pulled off a brilliant save to deny the visitors the opening goal.
The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Billy Innes won the ball in midfield for Hampstead before playing a simple pass to influential captain Lewis Lindsey-Gunn.
Lewis released a perfectly timed through-ball for striker Calvin Drew, who showed great composure to put the Blues ahead.
Hampstead threatened to double their lead before the break, but Isledon keeper Sam Barlow was in outstanding form as he pulled off a series of magnificent saves to keep Wolves in the hunt.
Isledon pressed for an equaliser, with Billy Shannon making an impressive start in midfield, and star striker Alfie Costello constantly testing the Hampstead defence.
But the Blues didn’t buckle under the pressure as Tom Disley and George Lakey both gave commanding displays in the heart of defence.
The all important second goal came 10 minutes into the second half when man of the match Lindsey-Gunn played another telling pass to Drew, who netted his second to become Hampstead’s leading scorer this season.
The win leaves Hampstead two points behind league leaders FDS, who have a game in hand.
