Murder accused is refused bail release

A MAN accused of murdering an eccentric millionaire, found dead at his ramshackle home in Hampstead, has been refused his release from prison custody to await his trial.
He is due to face a jury at the Old Bailey on July 2. Eighty-six year old motorcycle-riding bachelor Allan Chappelow was discovered with head injuries under a pile of newspapers.
Detectives went to his £2.5 million house in Downshire Hill, in June last year to follow up reports from a bank manager that large sums of money were being stolen from his accounts.
Financier Wang Yam, 45, arrested in Switzerland by detectives investigating the killing and the “stolen identity” of Mr Chappelow, was assisted by a Mandarin interpreter when he appeared before Judge Gerald Gordon. His bail application was rejected.
Yam, who denies murder, is represented by leading criminal QC Geoffrey Robinson.
