Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 1 March 2007

Private firms care little about caring

• COUNCILLOR Martin Davies talks about modernizing residential homes and sheltered housing (Help us to keep elderly in a home of their own, February 8).
Isn’t what he means privatise them? Council policy to put home care into the hands of private care companies has already happened and from my experience I would say the service has not improved.
Now they are planning to charge for these services.
As a home-care service user and a potential care home ‘victim’ I can think of nothing worse than being stuck in some privately run residential home, with unpalatable food, poor service and few safeguards against potential bullies.
Are you prepared to sell your home? Have your bank account scrutinised and asked about every pound you have – just so someone can take it all away and give it to a corporation?
Of course if you are wealthy enough, paying for what you get maybe a delightful way to spend your twilight years. But not all Camden residents can afford a first home to sell off and pay for their care.
So why sell off assets such as the Charlie Ratchford Centre in Belmont Street, Camden Town? It is as if the council – on the look-out to make a fast buck – are selling off our assets. Assets that are owned by the people and not by corporations.
Sheltered Housing is required but a block of 160 homes on Crack Row is no way to treat the elderly.
