Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 1 March 2007

Find real fixes for school run

• RE your article (School run traffic causes ‘gridlock’) and Councillor David Abrahams’ letter (I pronounce debate on school run open, Feb 22).
After spending a truly hellish 10 months driving up and down Fitzjohn’s Avenue to take my two-year-old daughter (now three) to her nursery, we finally succeeded in getting her a spot closer to home in January.
We are now lucky enough to walk to school, and on most days she even rides her bike, while I walk (or more usually run) alongside her with her baby sister in the pushchair.
Our quality of life has improved a thousand-fold since getting out of the car for the school run.
We get 15 minutes of fresh air and exercise, a chance to bond and talk about the things we see, and she arrives at school refreshed and happy.
I wish all families could have this option. But the reality is that many families, for many valid reasons, do not.
Let’s recognise that Camden (and the Fitzjohn’s area in particular) has some of the very best schools in the country. Let’s not penalise parents for wanting the best education possible for their children, regardless of their post code.
Let’s recognise that it is children’s safety, the environment and everyone’s quality of life that matter.
Let’s listen to each other, and take this wonderful opportunity that the new Camden Council has given us to find real solutions that work for real families and residents, once and for all.
Let’s use this consultation period to make Camden a blueprint of successful community co-operation. We all have the same goal – to ease the school-run nightmare for all involved.
