That was Real good says jubilant Freddie

Arsenal victory at Bernabeu in Champions League first leg

GUNNERS hero Freddie Ljungberg reckons Arsenal have finally adapted to life in the Champions League and should have scored more goals in their surprise win at Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

He said: “When I saw the draw, I said I thought Real Madrid would suit us quite well. They give us the chance to play, there is a lot of space and you can take a couple of touches of the ball. It is more open and we were able to play football again. We did well.”
Ljungberg, without a goal all season, turned in one of his best performances of the campaign as the Gunners ran out 1-0 winners in front of a near 80,000 crowd at the Bernabeu Stadium.
He told the New Journal afterwards that the Champions League had become the perfect tonic to Arsenal’s poor domestic form.
The Gunners have been beaten nine times in the Premiership and have been knocked out of both English cup competitions.
In contrast, Arsenal have won six out of seven matches in Europe.
Ljungberg said: “In the Premiership this season I think we have had problems with the physical game, I don’t think that is a secret, everybody talks about that.
“But when we play in Europe there is not so much need for it, a lot of teams try to play against us and that suits us very well.”
He added: “We were the underdogs after our recent form in the Premiership. We hopefully can take this back to the Premiership but it’s a different type of football. This result can hopefully help the belief of the younger players.”
The midfielder is
guarding against over confidence with everybody at Highbury fully aware that Real Madrid have the talent to reverse Arsenal’s narrow advantage.
But Ljungberg insists the Gunners could have bagged more goals in Spain.
He said: “I don’t want to speak about whether its going to be our year to win it or not. It feels good but it is only half-time. If anything the only bad thing is that we didn’t score more goals.”
