At 94, Peggy enjoys her renaissance
AT the age of 94, veteran campaigner Peggy Jay is
leading a drive to create a children’s play area at the
Vale of Health in Hampstead.
The Heath and Hampstead Society life president used to take
her children, including economist Peter Jay, to the neglected
enclosure on the Heath where the play area is planned.
Following a consultation in October last year, a £20,000
public-private partnership scheme was drawn up that will create
an under-10s playground with an eagle’s-nest, swings, a
balance beam and a springy camel. The Heath and Hampstead Society
and the Corporation of London have pledged £8,500, but
organisers are still searching for £11,000.
The Vale of Health playground will honour Ms Jay, who has lived
in Hampstead for 90 years.
A former chairman of the Greater London Council’s open
spaces committee, she was instrumental in setting up other children’s
play areas on the Heath. Ms Jay, who has 17 grandchildren and
eight great-grandchildren, many of whom live in Hampstead, said
the Vale of Health playground would be an asset for future generations.
She said: “It means a lot to me – it’s a renaissance,
a rebirth of one’s life work and interest.”
Her daughter Catherine Boyd, a Heath and Hampstead Society member,
said: “The playground will be a great resource for schools
like Christchurch and New End.”
